Dreamhost update
Don’t bother with them – absolutely useless!
I’ve set up a new VPS at www.memset.com for now, seems to hold up OK but will need upgrading from the low to the high end of the package scale before it takes any serious load.

Well the main problem was probably due to timezone and distance, but I found the performance as a whole to be substandard. Also, on a few occassions, the shared server was so heavily loaded I couldn’t connect to it – I had to email support to get them to check it out (and kill someone elses processes – a problem with shared hosting).
I’ll try to post how I’ve set up my memset miniserver so other railers can get the benefits of VPS hosting without needing to know the ins and outs of server configuration.
